Hey everyone. This is my first post. Right now I'm only asking questions but hope to be able to answer one someday. I have a 1971 Evinrude outboard, 125 hp that I got towards the end of last season. Looks like a lot of it has been rebuilt over the years. Probably not all at once. I'm pretty handy but don't really have a lot of know-how on outboards.

1st question:

The guy I got it from told me to run a 36:1 mix. I figured he knew what he was talking about so I did. I started doing a little more research this spring and everything says run 50:1. Should I go right to 50:1? Does it need a little richer mix due to the age? How can I find a happy medium?

2nd question:

I know I need to make sure everything is greased up. I expected to find some grease fittings. Only found 1 but it's for the steering. I have 2 screws down near the bottom, not too far apart. There's a small Allan key near the water intake and a flathead just above the fin. I didn't try to take anything apart until I did a little research. I'm thinking they both may come off and I pump grease in one until it comes out the other. That right? What kind of grease?

Are there any other things I should do on a regular/yearly basis? Any other advice is always appreciated.

Thanks to anyone that responds.

Re: 1971 Evinrude 125 hp

Hi nico,
that motor had a 50:1 oil/gas mixture. It is an electric shift motor that uses solenoids in the lower unit to shift from forward to neutral and reverse. it has an oil pump in lower unit to pump the oil to different passages using the electric solenoids.you should be aware to use only type c oil that you can get at any brp/evinrude dealer.never use gear oil in the lower unit or it will not shift.they were good motors, but some people will disagree. As far as grease, I have used a lithium based grease for fittings.Be also aware that the electronics for this motor is very sensitive,so never try to jump start the boat with another battery or hook up the battery connections with the key on because the power pack can blow pretty easy.keep the wing nuts on the battery very tight or use nuts.

50/1 is correct. the screws in the lower unit are for the gear lube, you put a pan under it, open the bottom plug, then the top one. you fill from the bottom pumping until it reaches the top, out top plug in then bottom use 90wt outboard lower unit oil, it has additives, to fight water intrusion, when ever removing the plugs, use a new washer, this is the #1 reason for water in the lower unit. this should be done every fall before the 1st freeze, in case there is any water in there. water in there will freeze and crack the case.

there is a lot of good info in this forum, click the link and read.

DO NOT take out the allen screw. It holds the pinion bearing in the gearcase. Both the fill screws are the same size. Large straight slotted screws. Fill from the bottom till oil comes out the top. Replace top screw before taking filler out of bottom hole.
