1971 Evinrude 50hp w/ Selectric Shift/Throttle Control - Stiff Cable

I have a 1971 Evinrude 50hp which seems to run really well since I got the carbs cleaned out, and the right lower oil put in. However my big problem seems to be a really stiff throttle. It isn't very smooth at all. I've tried adjusting the friction dial and it doesn't seem to make it any easier.. I almost have to use two hands to throttle up... going down is much easier. This is an older unit so I was thinking that perhaps I could just replace the throttle cable? I had taken the shifter off the side of the boat to see if I could get it apart, but it didn't appear easy to take apart?

So I guess my two questions are:

1) If just replacing the shifter cable will work, is there a place where I can find and order the correct part? (Part #, source (maybe iboats?))?
2) Does anyone have any instructions on how to get the Selectric control unit apart without breaking it? It the type with the friction dial, throttle arm, and three push buttons (forward, neutral, reverse).

Go to marineengine.com to view the parts diagram for your motor. You'll be able to see how the box comes apart. I have a similar box, though it is a bit older. The box has a cover plate that is secured with about 5 or 6 small screws. Very simple to open up. Yours may be different though. Check inside the box for any broken parts. You can also clean and relube the parts that rub.

You can also try to disconnect the throttle cable at the engine. If the throttle handle moves easily while the cable is disconnected from the engine, then the problem is at the engine. A good cleaning and relubing of the throttle tower bushing may be in order.

Thank-you very much for the information! The parts diagram for the remote control was gold!!! What was throwing me off was that the 6 screws holding the front cover on, looked like rivets on my control box. It was a bit of a pain getting those screws out without being able to use a screw driver, but I got them out.

It turns out it is the cable that is stiff, so I've ordered a new one from marineengine.com along with another broken part (Vintage, LINK,ADJUSTMENT 0206402) I found inside. It wasn't locking out the gears when under throttle... so it's probably good I fix that while I have it apart!
