hello:

looks as if i will follow some advice from some of the iboats engine experts and R&R l/u on my 1971 Evinrude 85HP so as to replace my impeller. i do have the OE service manual, but i was wondering if anyone who has done it could do a written "walk-thru" of how to do to augment what is in the manual. i know i need new seals, i assume impeller, some gaskets, an o-ring, type c oil, etc. but where to start? drain oil? what about trim tab and bolts? once that's done, how hard will it be to get off? any trick to help? i know the elec to solenoid has to be pushed thru, but what will it look like inside? any pix avail? how to do the water pump impeller change out and parts R&R? tips to reassemble. and how to get a good seal? what to look for as to any potential problems or problems area. engine has been cared for, but l/u only dropped once. a start here, do this, do that, be careful here, watch for this, here's how to do this... would be helpful.

or an iboats link on subject, if one exists.

one iboats poster said he changed l/u's more often than his shorts. no doubt he could do it blindfolded... but me? this will be my first time.

well, hope all have a nice weekend. don't eat TOO much, might slow ur boat down... lol :p

thank you.

Actually isn't pretty well spelled out in the manual?Or is it an after-market manual and not the original factory one?

disconnect battery, remove spark plugs.

disconnect the connector to the shift wires, mark if not colored. i use a small dowel and push the bushing down into the leg. tie a string to the wires, before, long enough to fish the wires back thru.

now remove trim tab and bolt under it. then loosen all the bolts to where a couple of threads are holding. you may have to shake flywheel back and forth, but it should drop down on the bolts, then finish removing bolts. and drop it out. then leave fish string.

remove the o ring on the drive shaft, 4 bolts on the pump housing, now becareful not to loose the woodruff key in the impeller/shaft. slide impeller up, notice which way the vanes are leaning. i use a little soap on the impeller and install it and the key on the shaft, then work the housing down rotating it in the proper direction for the vane to bend.

place the grommets, and o ring back on top of drive shaft. grease splines. grease wire bushing to go thru case, and reverse procedure. watch carefully the wire does not touch the drive shaft or exhaust housing or it will be toast in a second,

you may have to turn flywheel to align splines.

this is a 71 50hp but very similar.
