Can the thermostats on a 71-125 johnson be removed and discarded without problems?

You can do that without any problems, just make sure you put in new ones in place of the old ones! :joyous:

Really, do you want to re-engineer the cooling system on that motor? Do you have the means to test it thoroughly?
I would not do it, you most probably would end up with a motor running too cold!

I never liked the fact that it took time for the motor to reach 170 degrees to start spitting water, every time i start it i worry its going to overheat. Someone told me recently to just eliminate them, just looking for more suggestions before i tamper with a nice motor. Thanks for the input. RJZ

If it bothers you that much, install a pee hole. It will squirt almost immediately. Here's where to install a fitting to get the water.

Re: 1971 Johnson 125 hp thermostats

a cold engine will wear out faster than a warm one.
put new thermostats in , the engine will be better off for them being in there.

if the engines could be run without them ok, then omc would not of spent millions in the making of them and the time to install them and to make thermostat housings.
it is not a gimmick, it is needed to make the engine run at a certain temp, that temp will keep it going far better than it running too cool.

There is more to worry about than the thermostat.---Just install a new impeller every 3 years.------Like Frank says the pipe plug is already there to install a water pressure gauge.

This engine has a single thermostat, called a vernatherm. Later crossflows 78 and up used the dual stats. I believe these vernatherms ran colder than the dual stat engines. They should open around 115 degrees. Your engine is on the lower end of overheating if it runs 170 degrees. A stat replacement may be long overdue, maybe an impeller, too. Best to run with the vernatherm.

Re: 1971 Johnson 125 hp thermostats

the 1977 v4 crossflow had 2 thermostats that run at 143.
that is about right temp for most outboard engines.as for pipe plug being there that is not correct.
lots of v4 engines do not have a place for a tell tale and no area is plugged for the tell tale.
on the v4 crossflow for example there is the bubble back exhaust, not even all of these have a blanked off area to fit a tell tale.
some have a flattened thicker area on them to drill through and tap some don't !!!!

Sorry, you may find that the 1971 blocks had a pipe plug near the # 1 cylinder head.----In fact it is shown on the parts blow-up for the block.-----Item # 11 and part # 321164
