1971 Johnson 4hp impeller

Hi folks,
Recently bought 1971 4hp Johnson. It seems to run ok, quit a couple of times tonight, might be that I added to much oil to gas 16oz to 3 gallons.

But my question is what the Impeller action is supposed to look like. This engine has 6 or so holes on the exhaust tube and I see water coming out and it seems to bubble a little bit, but it is not like a larger engine where it has a stream. Is this right? I know the advice would be to swap it out anyway, but why if it is ok. If it ain't broke...

Its so easy to inspect,So if you are asking this question you want someone to say its OK the way it is? The only way to tell is open it up.Those 6 small holes do let a spray out YES.BUT to know if the impeller is OK, Well no one knows but you when you open it.

Myself, I would run that motor 16:1 and no less than 24:1 I have one of those that aced a rod, because of too lean of a mixture. Believe it or not, that's the only model Evinrude, built without needle bearings.

if you dont know when it had its last impeller replacement, for $15 and 15 minutes work, its well worth it.

The PO did this nut and bolt thru the exhaust tube and I'm worried they might have butcher the others as well and I don't need a new problem. I agree the best thing to do is change it, but if.....I'm only repeating myself.

That is one sick looking fix. Makes you wonder if the po would have even bothered changing the impeller. Best of luck. Rick.
