I know I'm not the only one who has dealt with this.
The shift wires have the standard ribbed one piece covering that is supposed to prevent the exhaust gases from entering the upper unit so the carbs are not running partially on exhaust fumes.
Recommendations are to grease this ribbed covering when you have to pull the shift wire up so it slides up.
I have done water pumps about 4x in the last 15 years and I always get exhaust coming up through the hole.
Anybody have a permanent fix for this?
TIA,
Jim
