Hello all. Well I finally got my new CDI ignition installed and it starts great. However I can't rev the engine in gear. It just stalls. I revisited all fuel components as well as fuel delivery system. I removed flywheel, distributor and rotor to inspect points. I found a small brass spring just resting on crankshaft between points. It was not connected to anything and I'm not sure what it does. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I guess its an anti-REVERSING spring. The manual I have is very fague as to where this goes. Any help is appreciated.

It goes on the crankshaft, with the coiled portion between the block where the wires attach, and the plastic wick holder. It should be lubricated very sparingly with a bit of EP grease where it rides on the shaft.

Its purpose is to prevent the engine from running backwards (yes, it can run backwards without it). When running in the correct direction, friction rotates it up against the plastic wick holder and it does absolutely nothing. However, it it tries to run backwards, friction rotates it against the wires block, shorting them out to the shaft, and preventing ignition firing.

Thanks for the reply. I had a no spark condition diagnosed at a local dealer and I replaced the components they suggested. Well my first voyage into open water it started to run really good however I heard this abnormal noise coming from the engine. It ends up they left the flywheel nut loose. Ever since then I've had this no rev issue. I'll try to figure this out. A picture would be worth a thousand words in this case.

Ok spring is in place. Any ideas on stalling when put into gear? Like Isaid earlier it did not do this prior to flywheel being left loose.

What spark plugs do you have in it?

Re: 1971 johnson 60 hp anti-rev spring??

Well I decided to leave the spring out and see what happens. Ran the boat last weekend and it reaaly struggled to acchieve plane and the whole time had a prettty serious miss. The distributor cap where the coil attaches is chipped so I thought it was allowing spark to partially escape before it got to plugs. Re-engineered that issue but discovered I had a dead miss at #2 cylinder???!!!! And this is with new plugs. Checked compression and its at 120 psi. Nice blue spark and its getting plenty of fuel (plug is wet when removed). So out of desperation I swapped out for a known good fuel tank and moved plugs around and miss went away. I hate to look a gift horse in the month but it's got me stumped. Any ideas?
