Hi Everyone, having problems with the lower unit and electric shift on my 71 Johnson 60ESL-71C motors. The original motor which powers a 71 16ft Starcraft SS was clunking into gear when shifting. I resealed the lower unit hoping that would fix the problem as the gear oil (Premium Blend) had water in it. Got out on the water and ended up blowing the clutch dog up and now realize was likely related to the clunking sound. Anyways, while pricing clutch dogs from local marine dealers got a line on another 71 Johnson 60ESL-71C for a couple hundred bucks so purchased it knowing parts on these motors are not cheap.

Have changed out lower unit and ended up with just forward gear in this 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] lower unit. Checked solenoids and neutral solenoid gave 0 ohms reading, so took neutral solenoid (5.7 ohms) from original lower unit that has blown clutch dog and put in this 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] lower unit and now have 2 solenoids reading 5.7 ohms.
Will be filling gearcase back up with premium blend electric shift gear oil and crossing fingers that finally will have a proper shifting lower unit.

As I want to get other lower unit up and running can anyone confirm that the shift solenoids green or blue wire will work in either position for neutral or reverse as long as they are connected correctly to knife connectors in power head? Do I really need to purchase a green wire neutral solenoid when I can just use a blue wire reverse solenoid in its place?

Thank you for all the expert advice that I have read on this forum as I did not know anything about these electric shift motors when I purchased last year.
