1971 Mercury 4cylinder 80 HP distributor cap

Hey guys, I was hoping that someone can tell me if there are replacements or mods for distributor caps for the 70's vintage clamp on Merc 4 cylinder distributor cap? Mine is a pumpkin orange color, with two vent lines. In any event, I took down the cap to have a look, and discovered that the carbon rod that is spring loaded in the center of the cap is broken off. Can you buy another carbon conductor? Any one know of a similar cap that would serve as a replacement or parts? Some @$^&(*( on eBay wants $900.00 for a similar used distributor. Another wants $200 for a used cap. Surely good ole American ingenuity has overcome this problem by some affordable means!

Yes that carbon rod is still available for a few $. Should be able to order it from any Merc dealer. You will need the motor S/N to order the part.

New-old-stock distributor caps will run you $150 if you can find them. Better off trying to find a complete used motor for a couple hundred and have a complete parts motor.

I think a company called CDI has an electronic upgrade to the distributor ignition system, but don't think it will be cheap.

Thanks guys! You folks are awesome to be so helpful. Seems most people would rather just steal and cheat than to help another. Anyway, dob you know where I might look for that carbon rod Moody Blue? What it might be called?
