what is the oil mix for a 1971 mercury 650 outboard

I'd reckon 50:1

According to my oweners manual the 650 is 25:1 for Break-in and 50:1 after break-in. I was also told by a Merc mechanic who rebuilt my head to use High-Test Gas and always run the engine dry (out of gas) after each use.

Hi all - I was just wondering if anyone could explain the reason behind what Bijo's mechanic said re: running the engine dry after each use?<br /><br />Is it to stop everything gumming up?<br /><br />Is this a common thing to do for outboards or is it just something that suits the older enjines. (mines a '71 650 too)<br /><br />Many thanks<br />Troy
