1972 100HP Evinrude 100293R Won't Start. - NO SPARK

I just replaced a bad starter and rectifier on this engine. Before, I was able to hand start it with no trouble at all. Now I am not getting a spark. The battery is bad but I tried to start the engine anyway. Is it possible to drain the battery to the point where the starter will turn but the ignition won't fire? I get about 10 volts across the terminals when the starter is engaged and 12 volts when it is not.

I will be replacing the battery tomorrow but I don't think that is the problem. What others items do I need to look at?

from what i've been told a bad battery indeed will cause problems starting the motor.

I decided to go and get a battery tonight. Thank goodness for 24 hours Wal-Marts. I hooked up the new battery and she fired up instantly. Do most outboard engines need a battery to run? I guess the ignition isn't like an aircraft engine's magneto system.

from what i've been told the older motors are battery driven and can be driven without a stator and rectifier. there is a min. amount of power needed in order to start these. so the old motors need a good battery.
