Looking forward to the day that I can actually give someone advice instead of asking for it all the time...

My lower unit has been sitting submerged in a freshwater test tank for about 3 months. I never got round to emptying it as I had been busy working on my powerhead. Anyway, as I had done all I could for the moment on my powerhead I decided to remove the lower unit and fit the new impeller and housing that I had purchased some time ago..

I drained the gear oil and....arrrrrggghhh......water.....snotter..... bogey...water....slop....oil....oil... more snot...some more bogey.... a little more oil.... followed by more water then finally oil... beige oil...

This is bad isn't it....

I disassembled the impeller to find that the lower housing had melted slightly at the centre. Could the water have been getting in there??? the gasket was burned away.

Regards

Stan

Pull the lower w/pump hsg and change the drive shaft seals while right there, they are ussally the problem or pressure test the unit before going any farther--Bob

Thanks again bob, I have looked in the manual to see how to remove the pump housing. I have the top of the housing off but how do I remove the bottom half? There doesn't appear to be any screws holding it there...

Cheers

Stan

Stant1man, The bottom of the water pump housing is a snug fit into the top of the gearcase. Your service manual should show a picture where the mechanic is using two pry bars to gently work it straight up and off. The seal at the base of the waterpump unit may be bad. Usually you would purchase an aftermarket waterpump base, impeller and cover(if necessary). Put in the new gaskets and impeller. There will be some left over gaskets and orings.
