Quick question, I have a 72 Evinrude 50hp electric shift. The engine has always ran great, but lately the shifting has gotten slower when engaging fwd or rev. I was thinking it was the lower unit fluid, so I changed it and it had a little water in it. I went ahead and replaced the fluid and the washers on the fill and vent opening. It seems I am still getting water in there, so I think I need to replace the seals. I have the evinrude service manual which has the steps to do it, but wanted to know if this is a very complicated procedure that I should not try myself. Anybody ever done this and how hard was it. I might wait until the end of fishing season before doing it. Should I also replace the water impellar as well? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

you are probably have to do it yourself, as there are not many around that want to work on electric shifts. always when the lower is off, replace the impeller, just good insurance. don't use a sierra impeller, just had a brand new one, disintergrate on the first try of my 71 50hp.

Tex, does your handle suggest you are in Texas? Is that a salt water motor? It could be a challenge if it is, especially the prop shaft seal.

Yes, I am in Texas, but the boat was run in Freshwater only. I do plan on replacing the impeller and housing, what brand do you suggest? As far as resealing the lower unit, do I need to have any special evinrude tools?
Thanks

First, I suggest you inspect it before ordering any parts to find out whether it has been updated to the plastic housing with stainless liners. If not, then order a complete water pump repair kit, which will come with the plastic housing. Much better than the original aluminum housing. Get the kit from a dealer.

The drive shaft seals under the water pump are pretty easy, since you are in there anyway. I would suggest you replace those and try it to see if you still get water intrusion. You can always do the prop shaft seals later if necessary. They are kind of a pain. Only "special" tools woud be a puller to get the bearing housing out and a pair of guide pins to put it back. But you can improvise. Hardest part is getting up in there to clean the crud out of the gear housing before reinstalling the bearing housing. Use OMC/BRP gasket sealant on the o-rings.

Thanks for the advice. I am debating on whether to do this now or wait until fishing season is over. Will a little water in the l/u damage anything?

It can tolerate a little bit. But not a lot. Hard to say just what the limit is. You are aware that it needs Premium Blend Oil? (previously called thpe C)
