When i purchased my boat, the guy i bought it from told me that the boat would not go into neutral by using the lever from the control box. He told me there was a pin in the control box that had broke. What he did, was wire a toggle switch to use to put the motor in neutral or forward. this switch works very well and has not failed me. I start the motor with the toggle switch in neutral and when its warmed up and im ready to take off, i throw the toggle switch into forward. now, reverse works fine from the lever on the control box, in and out of gear fine, but you have to make sure you are in neutral with the toggle switch. anyways, i want to get rid of this switch and ive been looking at parts for the control box to replace, however, i have no idea what pin he is talking about, and was curious if anyone has had this problem and could help. for all i know the guy i bought the boat from doesnt know what he is talking about, i dont know. could it be the drive shaft pin?????? any help is appreciated, thanks!

There is no pin actuating the switch in your control box. The switch has a lever on it and it is actuated by a notch in the throttle lever casting. See the parts diagram here: Johnson Remote Control Parts for 1972 65hp 65ES72S Outboard Motor
Most probably your switch is defective.
Just take apart the remote control, and it will be obvious (with some measurements) what is wrong.
See if you can fix the switch as it is quite expensive to replace. It is item #72 on the parts list, and its cost is probably more than your whole motor is worth ;-)

Good luck, Peter

Man that's just wrong!!

But yea $310 is pretty pricey for a switch. Maybe you could look into another control box?

Go to the top secret files at the beginning of this forum and look for salvage yards.

Flea-bay.

Personally I would go with a center-off, three-way toggle switch. Forward-neutral-rewind

Re: 1972 65HP Johnson control box

LOL, thanks for the help guys, I checked ebay, and I have a toggle in there now for just forward and neutral, the switch works fine going into reverse, i wouldnt mind a three way toggle, but the reason i want to get rid of my toggle is i have had poor luck in my lifetime with any toggle, they usually short out on me and i dont want this to happen when im on the water, i will just purchase a new one, yeah, $310 bux is pricey for a switch, but i have the cash and it is for these types of things, thanks for all the help again!
