1972 80 HP 800 Mercury outboard

Hi...I need your help. My lower unit will not go in reverse. After a little puzzle solving, it is not in the gear box and is in the lower unit itself. I can see where the rod refuses to go in reverse anymore. I took apart the gear bax, thats not the problem. Anybody have any idea how much this should cost me to get fixed? Thanks

Look on the left side of the motor while standing behind. Thjere is a guide that allows the linkage to move freely. Its just aluminum and will crack over time. If all thats fine, look for binding while shifting. Its really not that difficult to eyeball even movement in the shift satge of the motor. Keep us posted

are you sure that 2 inch gear bar doesnt have a crack in it. do you know anything bout the manual tilt . the hooks that grab the bar when put in reverse to hol motor down.
