Hello,
I have a 1972, 9.8hp Mercury (s/n: 345071), when I picked it up I was told it had no spark. I got it home and just for kicks I checked the plugs and had good spark so I put the fuel to it and pulled the rope. It started right up, ran for a few seconds and died. It did this numerous times but would not stay running, no there is no spark at all. Eventually I got the flywheel off (the nut was stripped), the points look terrible and I will be getting new. I cleaned them up and when putting it back together I apparently didn't get the flywheel to seat well enough because I sheared off the keyway. The questions I have are:
How do I test the stator and coils?
Did I "throw" anything off when the keyway sheared?
Any help or suggestions are appreciated, I am new to outboards and this gives me something to tinker with. Thanks

Great info., thanks. I tested the stuff above and have it running on one cylinder, I think I have it narrowed down to the points which I know are in rough shape to begin with. I will replace them and hopefully be running good. Thanks again for the help, if you have any other pointers for this motor I would appreciate any tips.

Re: 1972, 9.8hp Mercury 110 with lack of spark

Just wanted to update.......I have determined that one of the wires was bad and also noticed the insulator block to one of the contacts was cracked. I made up a new wire and taped up the insulator block for the heck of it. I got it all put back together and it ran like a charm for about 15 minutes and then I only had spark on 1 cylinder again. I have concluded that the new wire and a new insulator block will have it ready for the lake. Thanks again for the great information and troubleshooting tips, I am determined to have this thing running good.

Replaced the bad wire and insulator block, now it is running consistently like a champ.
