1972 Evinrude 25hp prop nut

Ok guys I have a 1972 Evinrude 25hp and bought a new prop for it. When I put the nut on and try to line up the hole for the cotter pin the nut isn’t tight enough. And it’s too tight to get the the next hole. Has anyone ever put a washer between the prop and the nut?

As far as I know the prop nut is not supposed to be tight against the prop.. As tight as you can get and still get cotter key in..

you could possibly bend the shear pin if too tight

Its fine if the nut is not tight just get as close as you can. No need to overthink it.
