Hey y'all I'm new to the boating world and I just got a 1972 ebbtide with the original Evinrude and I got her to start and the drive to engage but if I try to engage the fwd on idle it bogs down and dies but if I give it a touch of throttle it works but if I try and throttle up more it bogs down and dies. The only things I have replaced are the starter and the fuel pump. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Post the actual compression values here.----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" on each of the 3 leads ?----Clean the carburetors.----A new to you motor should have a new water pump impeller installed as well.----Or at least test the overheat horn.

I don't think the water pump impeller has been replaced but I do know it's pumping water. And I do not have an overheat horn.....as far as I'm aware. Would those cause it to die when under load? I can throttle up with out the fwd gear engaged but it dies when throttle up when it's engaged

See post #2 and reply.----There was an overheat horn installed in the control box when it left the factory.----When you answer questions you can come up with solutions !
