Hi everyone. Im new to this forum and have a few questions. I just picked up this 18hp fastwin and it needs a little tlc before I put it on my boat. It fires right up on the first pull. Its missing a prop and the lid latch is missing the piece that the little lock arm grabs to hold it down. So here are my questions.
1) I need a new kill switch/button, prop, hood latch, and that little white plastic piece that hold the fuel mix adjust rod to the motor on the front , where can I find these?

2) Possibly need a new master seal kit for the bottom end? And probably a water pump but the current water pump works just fine.

3) Was told I should re grease or get new bottom end bearing behind where the prop goes?

4) What fuel mix do I need to run?

Oh! one more thing. My prop shaft doesnt seem to have splines???? What kinda prop would I need.... How does it attach... EDIT: After looking some stuff up maybe its a 1971? I cant find a part number on it but its a short shaft 18hp according to the previous owner who said it is a 72... Looks just like this one Evinrude 18 hp twin fastwin

Oh BTW, I have a 14' 1979 Seanymph v hull. Idk what prop to look at or get....

Welcome to iboats

First look for a data plate to get the model number which is important when ordering parts. This website shows exploded views of all the motors and part numbers http://shop2.evinrude.com

I would suggest you get the proper manual for the motor.

Your prop is a shear pin drive and actually ebay usually has quite a few props on there.

Your gas to oil mixture is 50:1 (One pint TCW3 oil to 6 gallons of regular grade gas).

You need a manual to make sure your lower unit is not leaking. It does NOT take grease but it does take lower unit oil (Usually GL4)

Never trust a water pump unless you are certain of the age and condition.

99% of the parts yo need are available but best to hunt down used parts. It will take some effort but there are many used motor parts out there.

The nice thing about it also is that the 20hp Johnson also uses the same parts.

Thanks! Is it possible anyone knows the part #'s and which parts ill need in order to replace the water pump and then re assemble it? I assume its a good number of parts ill need. Also where is the gear oil fill and drain hole? I'm a car guy and restore old fords so I'm use to car engines.this boat engine thing is all new to me.
I also used the find new prop link which led me to a $85 prop. I'm assuming that it will work? Says its a 10" prop. I'm also thinking of using a modern kill switch in place of the broken factory one. Any reason that won't work?

Is it bad to run super instead of regular gas?

Hi Blue. Welcome to iboats. Here are some great links that can get you started on your tune up, including a parts manual with exploded diagrams. You can get any routime parts you may need such as carb kits, impellers, lower unit reseal kits, points & condensers, coils, etc... all right here at iboats. Assuming you have good compression, everything else is pretty easy to fix. As stated before, you'll want to run 50:1 mix with Champion J4C plugs. Holler if you get stuck.

3 HP Evinrude Lightwin Ignition System Tune-Up 1952-1967 (great ignition rebuild link)

I replace the black, push-button kill switch on all my vintage motors with one of these. Best $10 you can spend on your motor. It has a push-button and lanyard killswitch and installs in the stock location in about 5 min.

Go here; http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?s1=9oa392167vvsor98setdmeefg7&catalog_id=0&siteid=1

Under gearcase it will show you 3 different parts kits with part numbers to do the water pump.
Then in the parts diagram locate part #44 there are 2 of those. Those are the screws to drain and fill the gearcase oil.
Then the kill switch is listed under Shorting Switch.

I didnt see a actual kit. All i saw were like 5 or 6 parts that seem like at one point they came in a kit? Do I need that $73 housing for the impeller or can I reuse the old one...

And how easy is this to replace?
Is there a seal between the upper half of the engine and the lower when I take it apart to do the water pump?

Re: 1972 fastwin? 18hp?

In a small box at the top of the diagram it lists the part numbers for the water pump kit.

379766 Impeller repair kit
382458 Water Pump repair kit
382474 Chrome pump kit

There is no seal between the lower unit and the exhaust housing.

Onthe side of the exhaust housing there is a small cover with 2 screws, remove that cover. Inside is the shift rod, losen those but do not reome te screws. Then there are 5 bolts under the lower unit that hold it on to the exhaust. Remove those boalts and it should fall out.

Re: 1972 fastwin? 18hp?

It says the water oump kit is no longer available so I'm trying to figure out which parts are 100% necessary to replace when I ooen it up. That housing seem very expensive for what it is.

I also need a pic to see what the lock pin in the hood is supposed to look like. I think mine must be missing it because my lud won't latch down

Re: 1972 fastwin? 18hp?

The waterpump housings are generally in pretty good shape, so you should only need to replace the impeller and lower unit seals. I just changed the impeller in my '66 20hp which is virtually identical to your motor and its housing is still in pretty good shape after 50+ years. There's no way to know for sure until you drop the LU and visually and inspect everything. Either way new/used parts are readily available. It may even be worth while tracking down a parts motor. Virtually any 18/20hp Johnson/Erude of the era will work
