I have a pair of 1972 J65hp motors. One is on my boat and the other is a refurbisment project that I have only run once.

The motor that I am refurbishing showed a steady and ample stream of water flowing from the dual hole outlet in the upper, back portion of the motor's midsection. The motor on my boat, which is used often and runs fine with no sign of overheating, never has water flowing from these outlets. When run on the muffs, no water comes out of the lower exit points for about 30 - 60 seconds, but flows fine as soon as the thermostat opens up.

I am not particularly concerned about the motor on my boat, but am curious as to why I am not getting water flow from the upper exit points. Anyone have thoughts/suggestions about this?

As you might remember, I have a 1673 65hp. I don't have any problems with it overheating and I have never have more than a spray, mist, or at best an interrupted squirting action coming out of the two holes. It is kinda weird though, that you get a stream out of the motor that you are refurbishing.

Yeah, it is weird. Both motors were run on the same muff, with the same amount of water pressure, so its not like the hose was helping one of them. On the #2 motor, the stream of water is steady and substantial. I would liken it to a small waterfall.

I once had a outboard that had the same symptoms and it turned out to be a bad head gasket! maybe in your case a loose or warped head, how is the compression? any signs of water in the cylinders?

The compression on the motor is quite good - about 140 all around. I have never noticed anything that would lead me to believe that I am getting water in the cylinders either.

Compressions in the motor that shows more water flow, are actually lower than my main engine. They range from about 130 to 138 psi.

Huh. I can't think of anything that would cause the second motor to do that.

I know this thread is a few months old, but I was curious if you found out anything new about this?

I have a '72 65 hp johnson as well and after having the carbs professionally rebuilt the guy told me that I probably needed a new impeller because the motor wasn't pumping much water if at all. So I took the boat and monitored the motor with the cover off and it never got too hot. I took the boat out a hand full of times this summer with out doing anything about it. Now that I have all winter to think about why I can't see much water coming out the upper ports and I found this thread.

I finally ended up concluding that the mist or spray that I get out of the holes is what I was supposed to be getting, so I wouldn't worry too much about it if I was you. If you want to be sure you're getting proper water flow you could add a telltale (piece of hose connected to the water jacket that makes a steady stream of water when the motor is running). There is a thread on one of the motor forums that details how to install one, just search for 'installing a telltale' or something along those lines. Glad to see another 65 hp owner on here, they are great motors, and if you maintain it properly, it will last you a long time.

Thanks BigJ08. I'm sort of afraid of dropping the lower on this motor due to the electric components on the '72 and all so I think a telltale is definitely in my motors future. That should give me a better idea if I need to buck up and replace the impeller. Thanks again.

No worries about responding to an "old" thread. I know that some folks around here get a bit cranky about that, but I like it. The topics are always relevant, and new information is provided. This is true even if the OP isn't paying attention any more - others can still benefit.

TJ, if you do change your impeller, be careful when you lower the gearbox. The main issue is the wires that run to the solenoids. They can become brittle and may break if you let the gearbox fall to far/too fast. If in doubt, let a competent mechanic do the job.

If you are not sure when the impeller was changed last, I would go ahead and do it. Nothing will ruin a perfectly serviceable motor faster than being run too hot.

I still don't have an answer on my motors, but the main engine has never run hot, so I'm not worrying about it. Besides, I hit something with it a couple of weeks ago and both eyes on the swivel bracket sheared at the tilt pivot bolt. I received a new brack from Seaway yesterday, but its the wrong one - my fault though, because I gave them the part number. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I hate that!

Seaway is good about exchanges, but you have to pay shipping.
