Hi guys, let me start by saying thank you all so much for talking me out of the last boat I was gonna purchase.

I think I found my vessel. This time it is 1972 24' John Allmand cuddy. Very thick heavy Florida boat and alot less money than that beat up renken. Everything looks sounds. Nice solid hull. Couple soft spots near the stern on the deck.. might have been my imagination or maybe delam. New bottom paint. I like this boat alot!

The engine is '97 Chevy 350 and it has an older OMC sterndrive. I have already read all the threads on outboard vs i/o and Im prepared to deal with this thing. Thursday we're going to take it on sea trial. Is there any last things I should go over before I purchase my new ride?

BRP purchased OMC and is concentrating on the Evinrude line.No longer supports the I/O.You may want to post in the I/O section on the OMC I/O.
recomendations.

OMC drives should shift with the touch of a finger. If you have to exert any undue force to get it into gear then it will need a new shifter cable or an adjustment. Either way I would recommend a certified mechanic do the repairs or adjustments. Not to scare you but the adjustment is critical on those units. If they get out of whack then you're buying a new lower unit as they will eat the gears. However on the lighter side once they are zeroed in they are nearly bulletproof. And since you have the 5.7 then you don't have to deal with the King Cobra ( which is a nightmare all its own ).
The boat itself is - as you mentioned - heavy. They are built like tanks. So please don't expect any mind blowing speeds.

Do a search on OMC outdrives using the search engine here. There are quite a number of posts on these unit - all bad sorry to say. They are no longer made, not supported, hard to get anybody to work on them and problems getting parts.

The Almond hull has a great reputation.
