I think you can test the ignition with a spark gap tester such as the one in the attached pic. I have found this to be an exciting piece of equipment. Someone else with more knowledge can chime in. I made this one, copying what was shared by another forum member for a two cylinder with parts I had siting in my junk drawers...didn't even spend 50 cents for it. It looks like a 6th grade science project but it does what I need, very nicely. I would imagine you could make one with as many posts as you have cylinders.
For kicks I was going to make one with six posts for a Merc Tower of Terror. lol
I have used it to verify spark through to the plugs and swapped coil outputs to chase suspected coil issues vs. power pack.
Let's see if anyone can help more. This may be too simple for a complex ignition.
