Time vs. Money
Today I pulled the head on the above outboard and to my dismay the 2nd cylinder piston has deteriorated a point where there is little to no compression. I am going to need to replace the piston. All the other pistons as well as all 4 cylinder walls are perfect so I am looking at just replacing this one piston. The heads are also in very good shape. I am not sure on what may have caused it. Any ideas would be helpful. Also any ideas on where I can pick up a piston for this engine would be very helpful as well.
One last question: Would it be worthwhile to take the engine to a shop or replace the piston and move on? In a dilema I guess.
Thanks in advance,
LostBoater in Sacramento

"Looks like it will be awhile before I am on the lake again"

lost boater 72,

as for the piston deterioration there may be a blockage in the head so the water could not properly circulate. corrosion could cause this problem and for changing the piston if your going to do it on your own, get the manual for your outboard

Re: 1972 Johnson 125hp Piston - 2nd Cylinder

Merc16 & others reading,

The engine is spotless except for this piston problem that is what is strange. Very strange. Also I am still looking for assistance as to where one can locate a 1972 125hp johnson piston? Also possibly the head for this side as it is a little damaged. It is usable but if I am going to replace the piston, might as well go for it all right? ANY HELP PLEASE!!! I do have the manual for the motor so I am good, The SELOC version. Is there a better one? Thanks all

LostBoater
