Hi all... thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

My father just bought an old boat with a 1972 Johnson 50HP outboard on it. It wasn't running when he bought it... but he changed the plugs and battery and it started right up. The previous owner said it hadn't been running for a few years. My dad didn't even change the old gas

Anyway, in neutral it will rev up clean all the way; but in gear is a different story. Throttle response is perfect, and the boat runs mint until what I'm guessing is about half power, then just stops accellerating... ?

I've never tinkered with an outboard... but I've worked on carbs on bikes. Is it at all the same? Could this be simply a clogged main jet?

Is cleaning a carb on an outboard harder for any reason? I'm good with a wrench, but I don't know where to start! I've only worked on 4 stroke aswell.

Thanks again for any assistance you can offer.

-Rob

Remove the carbs and rebuild them.

Then give it another try.

Also a compression test might be in order.

TMD

Rob...

Rebuilding the carbs on an outboard is not difficult. Sometimes getting to the carbs is a pain but overall not difficult on your particular engine.

Get the rebuild kits and be sure to remove the jets and blow out all passages with compressed air and carb cleaner.

A service manual would be nice for you to have. The Generic type manuals are available from iboats store or you can get a reprint of the original service manual from Ken Cook Co. May cost a few bucks but has lots of troubleshooting stuff in there.

And yes....sounds like gummed up carbs.

Oh...just search for Ken Cook Co. on the web.

See:

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/carburetors/

Get rid of every drop of the old gas before you try to start it again. Also you will need to do the water pump and change the gear oil (make sure you use new gaskets for the vent & filler plugs).
