Re: 1972 johnson 65 hp fuel/oil ratio

Lots of info on this site if you have questions on your motor. I have the same motor and found out after purchasing it that the lower unit takes a special oil(type c premium blend) and nothing else. It's due to the fact that it's a hydro-electric shift system. Just thought I'd mention this as it sounds as though your motor may be new to you. Chuck

Thanks for the info Chuck. I was just looking for the oil type for the lower unit, and yes it is a recent purchase. If you have any other tips on this motor I would be happy to know them.

If you look in the marine store here on iboats I believe you can find the correct oil to put in that L/U. The description actually says that it's made for the hydro-electric shift motors made by Johnson. I believe that a 32-33 oz. bottle will fill the unit. And make sure to change the o-ring on the L/U plugs when you change the oil. Also found here on iboats. Spark plugs should be Champion UL-77V.

Just as everyone else will reccomend here, an owners manual and parts catalog will be of great value to you. I got my parts manual from e-bay for $25. Good luck with the motor. It should be a good motor with proper care.

Your gearbox requires "Type C" lube, or its equivalent. Go see your local OMC/BRP dealer to make sure that you get the right stuff.

Again, if you don't have a dealer right around the corner, look in the maintenance section under motor lubricants right here at iboats' Marine Store and you'll find the "type c" lower unit oil that you need. The description specifically says that this is the oil used for older electric shift Johnson motors.
