I am looking to replace the gearcase on my '72 Johnson 65. I have the service manual and the only thing that concerns me is that I don't have the gauge to check the shims to set for the pinion. I don't *plan* on replacing anything but the seals and O-rings when I transfer the parts to the new case. It is a relatively low hours engine, fresh water only and gear oil has been replaced regularly. The boat and motor has been in the family since new, so this is largely a sentimental endevor to fix the skeg and a minor dent from a rock strike. There is also value in inspecting the internals to verify all is well.

Of course, the original gauge is unobtainium and the replacements are quite expensive. I am willing to take the driveshaft to a mechanic to have the shims checked, but I'm not sure it is necessary if I don't need any new gears, washers, bearings, etc. Input from experienced mechanics will be appreciated!

Thanks!

If you are using the original drive shaft and pinion, there is no need to use the shim gauge. Just reuse the original shims.

Thank you for the reply. Hopefully all is in good shape so I can just swap parts.
