hi,
I got a carb kit for my motor and cannot get the orifice plug out l. I'm afraid I might damage it. if its cleaned very well and I can see a pinhole of light through it will that be enough?

the motor is 1972 6hp 6R72D

here is a diagram, its part #27

thanks

If you are confident you got it absolutely squeaky CLEAN, it should be ok. It takes a special screwdriver with parallel flats on the blade to get it out. An ordinary screwdriver with tapered flats will expand the soft brass orifice plug and the harder you try to turn it, the more it expands and the tighter it gets. Another case where the proper tool is almost a must.

thanks F_R,

do u know the name of that tool? if I can order it I will otherwise I already mashed it up a bit ill have to just clean the help out of it. the orifice plug itself shows unavailable on all sites I saw, I'd better not ruin it.

Tool is part number 317002, from an Evinrude dealer. But at $40 bucks or so, you might want to try what you have first. It may not have to come out. Besides, from what you say, it may already be too late to get it out.

thanks i will try it tonight leaving the plug in and report back.

years ago I rebuilt the carb used it one season then it was back to the original problem (which I have now) starts but dies after 5 sec. I now wonder if I had just blew air in through the orifice plug bolt hole if that could have fixed it. the carb looked perfectly clean, as it should because I cleaned it and only got a few uses out of it. the

success! sort of

the motor is running but is not able to go very high, I think I may have a watery gas mixture but a series of Seinfeld like events have kept me from getting to the gas station at the moment

I did get fresh gas, the motor sounds great but will not run past an idol like rpm. choke open and throttle turned all the way up its a little faster than idol like, turning down the throttle kills the motor.

could this be a poor float adjustment on my part? this was never a problem before. I also used new sparks which I rely on the local auto store to get the equivalent . autolite 303. not sure if that's a problem

If the 2 ignition coils are original then likely it needs 2 new ones.---Test for spark that must jump a gap of 1/4" or more.---Test compression as a blown head gasket is a possibility also.----Sounds like the motor is running on one cylinder !

just tested. both are 75psi and both wires spark.
I just pulled carb again, i had some doubts about the way I put the clip on the float. put it back ttogether all nice. now dead in the water wont start at all.

I'd like to post some pics later on to show my carb float.

ok so I bought a spark tester at racerons suggestion and I did have spark. at some point durring my testing I did shock myself. I have now disassembled the carb 3 times and I'm pretty sure it is correct and clean.

I now have zero starting at all, and looks like I have lost spark on both wires now. what could I have blown up when I shocked myself? ignition coil or something else?

I say looks like because im testing alone and the spark tester is flopping all over, I will confirm tomorrow with a helper

man this motor has given me one body builder arm...one

Here are some videos on how to clean and apply a carburetor kit for an OMC high speed fix jet carburetor. Displayed motors are 1968 Johnson 6hp and 1964 Evinrude 18hp outboards. The videos are very long and over detailed, but I want to help those who are new/novices to motor repair. Again, I am no expert or certified marine mechanic, but I am offering video to help.

You need to get your eyes off the carburetor and on the ignition system. Shocking yourself is not a spark test. Pull the flywheel and see what's wrong in there.

If your looking for a help cleaning your points and testing your ignition, then here are some YouTube videos that can help.

Not professional videos, but they can help guide you through ignition diagnostics and repair. The motor in the video is a 1968 Johnson 6hp.

I posted this to help another member, it may help you with the ignition.

Hopefully will give you a visual and help you some.

success!!

thanks for all the help here! it starts first pull and runs like a champ now, only tested in a bucket of water so far.

I have given some misinformation here. I had a friend hold the spark tester. I do have spark that can jump over 1/4" on both wires.

I watched the carb videos from cajuncook1. invaluable! first I did not address the punch cap (forgot the name for that) so I did that.
and most importantly I was putting the nozzle in wrong. how stupid, I dont know how I got that wrong but now its mint!

t

thanks again!
I have some other questions but I will open a new thread for that
