I am in search of a working remote control for a 72 johnsone 50hp that has the hydroelectric shifter. I am hoping someone has one or someone knows either where I can get a used one or a universal control that works on this engine. Please Respone.

Re: 1972 Johnson Hydroelectric Remote Control

There is no universal control for it. You probably have a bad shift switch and that is an NLA item. While it is possible that you might find an OMC dealer with an old one still in inventory, doing so is next to impossible.

There have been a few threads here at iboats, on installing toggle switches in your boat, to handle the shifting of your motor. You might want to do a forum search for them.

Also, your best bet in finding another control box for your motor, is on sites such as EBay. You can also use the Evinrude version (has push buttons) but be careful - make sure that it is for a hydro-electric shift and not the Selectric shift system that was used in the older OMC motors. This can be particularly difficult to "ferret out" sometimes, because there are ERude shifters for the hydro-electric system, that actually say "Selectric on them.
