Hi all,

I am purchasing a 1972 Fiberform Tri-hull with a 1972 Merc 1150 on it (electric trim) . Just curious if anyone has any feedback on this motor. Looks very clean inside, and the only thing that is needs fixing on it is the impeller which the seller is fixing. Is it a strong motor and what are the advantages and disadvantages? Any other thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks much!

As with all 30 year old motors, check it out with a compression guage. Compression readings will determine how good the powerhead is. As for the performance, I have had good luck with the few I have had. The straight six has been a good motor for many years. The 115 being the most common straight six. It is hard to judge a 30 year motor, but take your time and look at everything.

the 115 is middle of the road for this powerhead.
not over stressed (150hp), not underpowered (90hp?)
.... a good motor. ;)
how she's been maintained is a whole diff. story.
afraid the latter is the more important.
good luck,
M.Y.('70 1150)

Supposedly these are very powerful. Mercury underrated their motors at this time period and the inline-6 115 probably puts out MUCH more power and a WHOLE lot more torque than the modern 3-cylinder models.
Your motor should be running very smooth, little or no vibration, and have smooth acceleration and hole shot.

Best bet is a compression check so all cylinders are within 10% or so...make sure all the plugs look the same (not one kinda shiny, which means water intrusion)...check for deteriorated wiring..good motors
