1972 Mercury Outboard

I just acquired another boat with a 1972 Mercury 115 h outboard on it. At least I am pretty sure this is the year of the engine assumeing the 115hp cover is correct. The serial number is 3273742. Anyway, when I put the engine in I believe reverse gear and try to turn the prop by hand it will turn the motor in each direction. However, if I put it in the other gear it will only turn the motor in 1 direction and clicks when spun the opposite way. Is this normal and if not what may be the problem?

Sounds pretty normal.

You need to put the boat in water, start it up, and try it there.
