1972 steering change evinrude

1972 50hp evinrude. has old style steering, where the cable has to be secured to the splashwell with one of these stupid things...

<br /><br />are there any other options i can use, perhaps have a tilt tube welded onto the front of the motor mount. as it is now, the engine CANNOT be lifted/tilted up at all , not even 1 inch or it hits the steering arm/cable assy.<br /><br />the newer style motors have the tilt tube integrated as part of the engine mount....<br /><br />thoughts? ideas? concerns?

These use the engine mounting upper bolts to secure them to the transom. The ones I have seen work pretty good. You just have to make sure the tube is adjusted so that the engine swing is the same on both sides.

I have the old style steering myself, had to make a bracket to get it in the right place but now it works fine. You just have to experiment with placement before you mount them.
