Okay, Here it goes….the history of this motor..

2005 – Ran Great

2006 – Would NOT start or run – took it to a boat mechanic to get fixed… He replaced to coil and rebuilt the carb. It would start and run, but on low speed it would backfire and die….He said it was in the carburetor and he couldn’t fix it..

2007 - Pickup a Johnson 1968 18hp – runs great and that’s the motor I have been using on my fishing boat.

2008 – Pickup up a 1973 20hp carburetor on ebay.

2011 – I had a man I worked with rebuild the (new to me) ebay 20hp carburetor.

2012 - Now I put the carburetor on today and tested it. It started right up and runs, but still pop’s (backfires) and dies at low idle. I noticed that there was fuel dripping from the bottom of the carburetor. I’ll get back to that issue. It has a clear fuel line from the fuel pump to the carburetor. And as it’s running you can see air pocket or bubbles in the line. (so that makes me think it might be the fuel pump?? Does that sound correct??? ) So I’m going to replace the fuel line because I believe that is why the fuel is dripping from the bottom of carb bowl. I take off the carb and notice that the bolts holding the bowl on are loose (all 4).

My question is could the loose bowl cause the motor to pop (backfire) at low idle? Or should I replace the fuel pump too?

Thanks for your help !!

I guess your co worker forgot to tighten the float bowl.

Tighten it all up, replace the fuel lines and ensure that the clamps are tight.

If that fails the fuel pump may need a rebuild. Will pumping the primer bulb keep the motor from acting up?

I tried pumping the bulb with my foot, and I don't believe to help any.

try opening up the mixture needle an 1/8 th turn at a time as well, your idle mixture sounds too lean

Okay I will try that....I was thinking, It might not be the fuel pump because the carb should be pulling from the bowl...Is that correct?

Is there any chance the timing could be off....and making it backfire??? It starts on the second pull and runs very stong
