1973 25hp eninrude

i have a 1973 25hp evinrude ortboard model number 25352, i was trying to plane out and ther was a noise like a "bang" type noise. no noise in slow speeds and did not notice the gear selector jumping around like out of gear. it sounded like it was popping out of gear. if the forward gear and clutch dog are the problem how can i check them? i just bought the motor and the lower gear oil is new and clean from the old owner.<br />thanks for your help..

The clutch dog and/or gear will have minute amounts of 'ramping' apparent on them. The square edges get worn down. I have heard some boaters have had luck with filing the edges, but I haven't tried it myself.
