1973 40hp Rude gear case input shaft install height

Doing the water pump and it seems the key way for the impeller is below the wear plate.. the key way I took out was notched on the bottom to clearance the plate..
Is there something going on in the gear case I should look at?
Tried using the new water pump I got with the 75 J but it's different..

Key is supposed to be notched. Are you saying it isn't? See if the old one works.
