1973 50hp confusion

I have a 1971 16 foot supersport with a 1973 50hp rude on the back..i just got it going and am thinking it is running rich. while in idle i can turn the knob on the front of the motor and it idles nice and lean but as soon as i touch the trottle it dies. and so i ran it rich and I went through about 3 gallons in 30 min. and with the boat empty and my GF who weighs 120 i only got 17mph on the gps....any advice would be awesome.

suggest you look for fuel leaks, but that is about normal for a 50 hp at wide open throttle. 50hp 5 gallons per hour at wide open throttle.

suggest checking timing, replacing fuel lines, and link n sinc. did you rebuild the carbs with kits, and remove the high speed jets?
