I have a 1973 85hp evenrude. i bought the boat and motor together , so i'm assuming the tach worked before . so i havent messed with switch on the tach .
when i turn my accessories switch on ,the tack zeros out ,like it should . but it doesnt move off the zero (read any rpm at all). i'm thinking it is the connection to the engine . But i dont know where on the engine it connects . Could anyone tell me where to start looking ?

Chris

There is a gray wire in the control, that is the tach lead.

Is your battery charging? Check your rectifier.

R.Johnson ,Thank you sir .Seems the gray wire in the control was never hooked up. :( .
I hooked it up and vwalla. But i do have a few questions . Where should this engine idle at rpm ?
right now it idles at 2000 rpm ,Runs really good but i get a nocking sound when i let off the throttle . It doesnt do it if i let off the throttle real slow .the engine sat for a about a year . I have replaced all fuel lines and bulb, cleaned tank , and used deep creep sea foam .by spraying it into the carbs .compression test was real good ,replaced all 4 coils ,plugs,ect... im running my mix at 50:1 98 octane do you know the jet settings , (how many turns ). High side and low .. Thanks in advance Chris .

Powerprochris, just a couple of things for you to check.
First, on the back of the tach make sure it is set on 4P. The engine idle needs to be set with the boat in the water, in forward gear at 650 rpms. The jets on your carbs are fixed fuel jets and are not adjustable. Just make sure they are clean and not stopped up at all. The top jets on each side of the carbs are the low speed fuel jets, and the bottom two on each side are the high speed fuel jets.
