Hello to All. I just srarted working on my 9.5 this morning and when I pump the fuel to it I had a great deal of gas leaking from the carb. I am trying to remove it for a rebuild and can't figure out how to acces the slotted screw for removal. It is the screw under the throttle control cam. Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction. My manual says to remove five srews but doesn't go into any detail. Thanks, Rick.

Put the shift in forward and turn the tiller handle all the way counterclockwise so that you can reach the back screw.

When you put your new float and float needle in the carburetor, be sure to get the clip attached between the float arm and the needle.

eseke. Thanks so much. It sure makes it easy when someone else knows what your doing! Turns out the clip you mention is not included in this carb. The needle just sits on top of the float brass. Thanks again, Rick.

some of the older kits don't have them.

The clips have been included in all the oem kits since the 1980's along with the new floats and needles. You can't fix the cork floats, you have to replace them. The alcohol in our wonderful gasoline disolves the shellac coating and the floats won't float when they are saturated.

Re: 1973, 9.5 Carb. Removal

I'm not being clear enough. The needle doesn't even have a groove for a clip. This carb. appears to have never had the clip as it isn't mentioned in the parts manual either. Up here in Alberta, Canada, I have not run into any of the alcohol gas you mention. Our cork is as right as rain so far. Just put a kit in a 1971 4 HP and now this 1973 9.5 and the cork is as good as the day they were made.

The kit I bought was for the wrong carb. so now I'll have to re-order it on Monday and wait for another couple of weeks for it. That's the down side of where I live. They seldom have parts in stock.

Another question about this motor. I notice the leg is locked into position when in neutral but unlocks when shifted to forward. Is that the way it is supposed to work? I pulled the flywheel and the coils are cracked so bad it is hard to believe they still work but I am getting spark. I'll order them on Monday as well. The compression is well over 60 but my gauge decided to pack it in today and won't hold the pressure. The pressure leaks out very quickly and by the time I get around the back to see the reading it is just dropping past 60. Rick.

I'm the one that is not clear, so I will try again; the parts in your float valve system are obsolete by around 20 years and need to be replaced.

The OEM carburetor kit will have the correct parts and a new float. The float is a proprietary part and is only available from BRP.

The motor is designed to release when the motor is in forward gear so that it will swing upward when you strike an underwater object. It should lock in reverse gear. The adjustment is made to a set screw in a small cylinder around what looks like a bicycle spoke in the midsection.

Well now I get it. I guess I'm the first one to pull this carb. apart since this boat first hit the water. I better order an impeller too! Thanks again, Rick.
