Hello all...just thought I'd pick your brains a bit. I have been lurking a while here and know there is a lot of experience here to glean from. Bought a used 9.5 Sportwin a couple weeks back. Put it through the paces at the house and did all the checks and maintenance items I could before I put it on the water...impeller, lower unit oil, plugs, checked points etc. Runs first pull every time and seems good in about every way. The one thing I can't seem to figure, the exhaust port doesn't spit a stream of water like I'm used to seeing on some of the larger Evinrude motors I've been around. I get very little from the "visual" port really not more than a mist mixed with the exhaust. That said it is a huge port on that with a flexible tube inline to it so I don't expect to see it peeing a solid stream I guess. The motor seems to run cool and vent ports at the around the lower unit spit water. The housing seems to be full. and drains when you shut it down so know it's lifting water at least. I assume it would probably have something to do with the copper tube running up from the water pump not sealing tightly somewhere. What should I be looking for?

It is a matter of interpretation I suppose.------You will not see a lot of water coming out with the exhaust relief.-----Did you check the thermostat ?----I often see them missing or stuck open.

Kind of as I figured. I did not pull the thermostat yet. I probably should do that. Although I rarely can tell by looling at one and I usually just replace them if i'm going to the trouble of pulling one.

Generous water drops blowing out that exhaust relief port (bellows hose) are what are expected..

If I'm dealing with a brand new impeller and there seems to be water to the motor... I know it's pulling water where would I want to start looking? It definitely spits water drops but it just seems like it's mostly exhaust. Again I am not sure there is any issue just curious what I should see/do.

Post a picture here or look at you tube videos.-----I am sure there are lots of videos posted.----Or find---leroysramblings----Lots of information on them there.----I have 10 or more of these motors for parts / rebuild if I ever get the ambition.

Today I went to look a little deeper. Had almost no water in the exhaust. pulled the thermostat and found it dry on both sides. I think a whole new water pump/thermostat is in order instead of just an impeller. something must not be sealing. what other gaskets/o rings/misc parts should I do at the same time? I seem to always need one more thing to the boat before I can fish.

I call these the Harley of portable outboards. Rumble sound, lots of water coming out of that BIG pipe. 1 inch shorter than any other outboard. Great for shallows. Embrace it.

I love the motor honestly...I am sure it will be fine once I get it together again. It is in great shape overall with the exception of several missing and incorrect gaskets/o-rings that someone must have "bush fixed" along the way. It was cooling and getting water still somehow. Once I get it together it will be fine. Unfortunately between waiting for parts and taking apart WAY more stuff that I would like to I'm burning my summer fishing time! Water tube refit is the next project...looks like someone didn't have all the components in right from the last impeller job and that was probably why I wasn't seeing as much water as I should have. This isn't going to be a fun job but I'm stubborn and I still have to believe it's worth doing.
