My start rope broke last week but the inner layer held so it didnt break all the way, just needs replacement. I called west marine and asked if they had a parts dept and the guy asked what I needed? I told him and he said sure they have start ropes. I drove all the way there and they didnt
So I bought a 3/16 rope- too big. I went to ace and they had 11/64th start ropes
Edit- I got it done. Im going to post instructions because I couldnt understand from other instructions.
If your rope is intact: Leave the starter on, pull the rope all the way out. With the rope out, put a vice grip (not tightened, its just holding the gear up not gripping) under the black plastic bendix gear to hod it up against the flywheel. That holds everything still and maintains the factory tension while you then replace the rope. Cut it off the white screw pulley. Thread the new rope through the engine cover and make sure it doesnt catch on anything on its route to the white pulley. Tie the new rope onto the pulley through the hole. You either measured the new rope to the old dimension or you are going to put the handle on later- but make sure you have the handle on the right length or put a vice grip on shorter than the handle length- you dont want your new rope sucked all in. Now you just let the vicegrip off the bendix and it will just suck the new rope in and be set.
If your rope broke (or if you removed the starter unnecessarily like me) reinstall the starter with no rope. hold the black sliding bendix gear up with a vice grip like before so it maintains gear contact with the flywheel.- this keeps everything from unwinding while you now turn the big flat screw on top 18 times to tension the spring. Rethread the rope like above and let the visegrip loose on the bendix- it should all wind in and youre set
