1973 Evinrude 115 dies

1973 evinrude 115 on a 24’ pontoon, running like a champ all day until I got about 1/4 mile from the ramp heading back in, then it fell on its face like you turned the key off, not a fuel problem because it has fuel all the way to the drains on the fuel bowls. I waited about 20 minutes and it fired up and ran fine. I put a new style controller on this older motor which is hard wired in, when I wired it up I didn’t wire up a horn for the motor, it didn’t seem to be hot and was pissing water great just as it always does. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It died just like you turned the key off, after sitting for about 20 minutes it started back up and ran great, I was about 1/4 mile from the ramp so I didn’t run it much longer. I had someone from a Facebook group say it could possibly be the power pack is failing when it gets hot then it worked again once it cooled down. Looking to see if anyone here has any thoughts on the problem.

You have to act on our thoughts.--------Do a compression test on this motor.-----Just to establish the overall health on this 47 year old motor.----Post your numbers.----Then test the maximum ignition output by forcing the system to jump a gap of 7/16" or more.-----Check all wiring on the motor.------Perhaps test run with black / yellow stripe wire disconnected on the powerpack.

I purchased the motor to use on a pontoon boat restoration project, 4 months ago when I did the restoration I did a compression test on the motor and it was 120-125 on all cylinders, not knowing how long it had been sitting I rebuilt the carbs, replaced all coils, replaced plugs and put a water pump kit in it. It has been running great.
