1973 evinrude 18 hp carb question

I rebuilt this carburetor a couple of weeks ago. When I did I initially left out the slow speed needle valve bushing. The original service manual made no mention of this. After I discovered I left it out I disassebled and put it in. When I tried to remove the old one all I got was pieces. I assume the carb cleaner turned it to mush. After that the motor still never ran right. Would only run on choke. So I took the carb apart again. The problem is You cant remove the old bushing to give it a good cleaning, with out destroying the old one. Do I have to buy a whole new kit in order to get the new bushing Iwant to do this repair right this time? i am getting way too aquainted with taking this carb apart. Also I am unfamiliar with the little red, rubber retainer. Do I screw in the needle valve and then slip the retainer in to place? Thanks

That red retainer has a little notch on top that fits into a notch on the carb. Think you are supposed to find your setting then push it in with a screwdriver or punch. Does that sound right.

By saying bushing, do you mean packing material?

All of the other carburetors I have messed with had packing material. This one has a small plastic bushing that I assume goes over the needle valve before you screw it in. The problem is that it stays in there when you take the needle out. I have found that the only way to remove it destoys the bushing. So I guess I have to get a whole new kit minus the float, to get the bushing. Thats what I get for not getting it right the first time.

No, No. The bushing and retainer are both available separately from a dealer. The bushing is part number 314166, they call it a "bearing". The retainer is part number 315232.

The bushing is a seal to prevent air from being sucked in around the needle. You have to remove the old bushing with a hooked tool of some sort. I've heard of using a drywall screw, but I've never tried that. You can also use your wife's crochet hook, if she even knows what that is. Grandma knows.

You simply push the new bushing in the hole with a rod or punch and push it all the way in. Imagine it as a funnel and install it so you could pour liquid through the funnel from the outside.

The retainer simply is there to prevent the needle from spinning around from vibration, it is not there to seal anything. Screw it onto the needle till the threads are about to protrude, then place it into the recess of the carb and screw it on in. As I mentioned, it doesn't seal anything, so it just has to be there to provide friction.

Thanks for the part number. I got the new bearing this afternoon. I started to install it and it is a pretty tight fit. It won't really slide like ia imagined. Is it OK to tap it in with a hammer and maybe the right size finish nail?

One more thing. I was able to set the needle valve bushing/bearing (the little plastic funnel shaped piece). In the carb kit there are three little o rings. Does an o ring go on the needle valve as well? I an not talking about the red retainer, these are small o rings. I read another post about this and there was some talk about an o ring on the needle valve. I was unsure whether they were talking about the retainer or not. Thanks for the help.
