Bought this engine a couple of weeks ago. Engine would start right up and run good at high RPMs but stall and die in the "slow" or "shift" position. Assumed I needed a carb rebuild. However, while starting and checking the water pump, I tried to see how low it would go before stalling, and it died. Now it won't restart at all. Compression is 140 on lower and 135 on upper. Tried new plugs and nothing. Bought a spark tester, and I am only getting a faint orange spark on lower and nothing on upper cylinder. New at outboards, but kind of confused as to why it would suddenly lose spark. I realize a motor this old could use a tune up kit and a carb rebuild, but I'd actually like to know if it's the points, coil, etc that has caused it to lose spark. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd check the spark plug wires. I would bet they are worn where they enter the mag plate. I just replaced the plug wires, coils, points and condensors in my 68 9.5 evinrude. Was a pretty simple job and only cost about $75. Now it runs great. I only needed to replace the wires but I figured I might as well replace the whole ign. system and be done with it. Plug wire is only a couple bucks a foot. Marineengine.com had the parts to me in 2 days.

I don't think that motor has a power pack. If not I'd start with the points. They can be corroded up.

What did you set the spark checker at, 7/16"?
I would start by pulling the flywheel and checking the ignition componets under there.
Make sure the points are clean and adjusted properly.
By the way you described it, you are still going to have to rebuild the carb.

Thanks for the replies. I sat the tester for about 1/4 of an inch. I priced the ignition and carve parts here all for about $150. How difficult is setting up the points and the carb rebuild for a newbee? I'm mechanically inclined but never did either.
