OK took out a 73 25hp 2 stroke that I picked up 2 weeks ago. New points/condensers, plugs, fuel line, carb was pretty clean when removed and inspected. Compression is at 100/102. Starts and runs on 1-2 pulls. Now here is the problem that I can't get. While using it this weekend it worked great most of the day. Then I gave it full throttle, it took of , kind of back fired/stalled. Started on one pull but then would only run in gear if the choke was on and then only at about half power. I pulled the plugs and both were dry and warm so i think both cylinders are firing. Tank is like new no rust with fresh gas and mix bought same day. Fuel line and bulb on the tank are new. Bulb was hard(full) when the stuttering happened, gas was about 1/4 full. Screen on the fuel pump clear. Made it back under half power to the dock. sat overnight. Started on two pulls next morning. Gave it full throttle and floated the choke back and forth and then it finally kind of just kicked in and took off. Ran it full throttle right back to the dock on the mainland (I was overnight on an Island). I like the engine and it ran great but I don't want to be stuck. Feels like it just wasn't getting enough gas under load. Any thoughts what to look for or check? Perplexed right now. Thanks.

Did you change out the fuel line from pump to carb? It's a 5/32" line, and if it's original, it may be deteriorating on the inside due to ethanol. Bits can flake off and gum up your freshly cleaned carb (been there). There's a screen at fuel pump inlet, but nothing past, so changing that line is a must whenever I clean a carb. Since you got wide open out of it last run, you may have pulled the gunk through the main jet, and your carb may not need to be cleaned again.

I'm assuming it was a carb issue, and not ignition related.. sounds like you serviced the ignition, so carb is my guess.

Good luck!

No I didn't change the fuel line from the pump. Easy and cheap enough to do. I'll get that done and see if it solves the issue. Thanks.
