1973 evinrude 50hp gunk on water pump

just pulled the lower end on my 1973 50hp rude. ontop of the water pump and around the exhaust extension it was full of gunk and some water.....what does this mean. need some help this is my first big motor. first pick is of gunk and 2nd is the underside of housing where there was alot of grease. third one is the cavitation plate that was also covered.

what does the gunk look like? white, black, purple?

You been running it in a barrel??

just got the motor, ran it in a barrel for about 30 sec just to check it out.....

That area fills with cooling water that has gone through the powerhead and done it's job. If the water in the barrel is full of oily scum, it gets circulated through the cooling system. Perhaps the previous owner ran it for extended time in a barrel? Perhaps he de-carbed it in the barrel too?

I'd rinse it out and put it back together and see how it does in the lake where it was designed to be run.

thanks for your help..yeah i figure this thing was left to sit i found like 300 dead black ants in it.
