I have looked in the archives and I can't exactly find what I am looking for so here it goes: Recently I put an impeller into the water pump. This involved taking the lower unit off, obviously. I put the lower unit back on, put a hose on it and started it up. Water was flowing out of the seam between the lower unit and the exhaust unit, or middle unit as I have started to call it. I forgot to put the gasket stuff on the edges. So, I unbolted the lower unit from the middle unit but left the shift rod connected. All I needed was a little bit of room to get the sealer in there. Mission accomplished. Now I put the hose on it again and started it up. Now it leaks out around the shift rod coming out of the exhaust, or middle unit down on the ground. It seams to leak whether the engine is running or not. Water however is coming out of the middle of the prop as well as the side holes when it is running. The questions are: Is this right? If water is coming out of the inside of the middle unit and leaking out of the shift rod hole, do I have bigger problems than possibly some sort of shift rod seal? Does having water hose pressure and ear muffs create this condition? My worry is that it is leaking internally and not enough water is getting to the powerhead. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Most of what you are saying sounds normal. If you wanna make sure, just pull the lower drain plug out and see if there is water in it.
