I have an 1973 85hp Evinrude that I can't get to start for the life of me. I bought a new Stator, and Power Pack, I now have spark going to all four spark plugs. It turns over fine, and sometimes it acts like it wants to start, but dies out quickly. Do anybody have any ideals on getting this engine to run. I do have the manual and it's not providing me with any insight.

Howdy, Magicman.

Go to www.outboardrepairs.com and look up wont start. You will find a lot of advice.

If that doesn't put you onto the cause, come back here and tell us what you did and what you got for results.

Good luck. :)

I had some problems with getting my 1972 Johnson 85 to start this summer. It turned out to be that the points needed adjustment. Fired right up after I set the to spec.

I'd try rebuilding(cleaning) the carbs first and checking that all of the linkage is correct. If that doesn't help, try checking the points (if you have them).

Correct me if I am wrong, this engine doesn't have any points due to the Stator Flywheel relationship. I read alot about the kill switch??? Does this old engine have a kill switch, if so where will it be?

The stator/flywheel combination act as an alternator for charging the battery. Under the flywheel you are likely to have either points or some other type of sensor that triggers the pulse pack.

Will I find the word "POINTS" in the maunal, or will it use a more technical name that I should be looking for? It's been cold and we had alot of rain around here, will that have any effect on this engine starting. I have an OMC manual I got from the public library. Please note, I changed the stator because it had some green goo leaking from it. After replaceing the Stator, I got spark to my plugs.

I have a 73 johnson 135 v4. Probably like this engine of yours. It doesnt have points but a power pack and cd ignition. If you are getting spark, then the ignition is "live" and motor should run if you have compression and fuel. Have you checked your compression? Assuming it ok, then I bet you have a fuel problem. It can be hard to get fuel in if motor is not set up properly. The choke needs to be applied and the throttle flappers must be open enough to get the choked fuel charge into the engine. Mine was mis adjusted so the throttle flapers weren't open enough even with the throttle lever pulled up all the way, so it was real hard to start. A first check would be to squirt some premix into the carbs Past the throttle flapers in the carb barrels and see if you get life. Good luck and get a service manual to read how to set up choke and throttle with timing advance etc. You can read about my engine in my history, something like "73 135 Johnson summary" Good luck. Also, you should go through the carbs to make sure the jets passages are clean and the floats are set up right. I am almost sure yu have a simple fuel delivery problem.

Try to continue holding the choke after it tries to start. If you are a little light on fuel, it needs to be choked even after it starts.

You don't have points. Ditto what SCO said on trying premix. Let us know if that doesn't work.
