Is it an absolute necessity to use a lead additive in the fuel? If so, should I use an octane booster. I have been using the lead additive and noticed a lot of build up in the carberator, but question what the build up is.

You mean a lead substitute, don't you?

The lead in leaded fuels lubricate (and therfore cool) the upper cylinder - specifically the valve seats. Cast iron heads such as yours will pocket the valve seats if they don't get enough lube - that is the one and only reason for lead. Alloy heads have hardened seats as standard.

These days when a head is reconditioned it is common practice to fit hardened valve seat inserts, this negates the need for using lead (and in the automotive world it's inperative for L.P conversions).

So, have the heads ever been reconditioned?

Aldo
