So that is the motor. I have seen timing listed anywhere from 6-10 degrees btdc, so which is correct? I have a problem with it "stumbling" and occasionally backfiring when accelerating from idle. The setup is all stock. I took the distributor apart and cleaned the entire assembly and freed the centrifugal weights which were solidly corroded, then retimed it at both 6 and 8 degrees btdc several times without success correcting the problem. Suggestions on further steps?

Thanks for the help,

Jim

I'd accelerate the motor with the light on it to see if the advance is working.

I will try the light and advance tonight, but I seem to recall I may have done that, but I'll try again. If advance is good I will look to the carb. In that respect, anything in particular I should look at/correct?

Thanks

In response to the advance working, I hooked up the timing light and it does advance smoothly with increased rpms. So if it is the carb, what should I be looking for/at. Should I just get a rebuild kit or does this take some skill an knowledge from a shop?

Carb probably needs a rebuild in order to clean all the passages, and to reset everything and replace the accelerator pump.

When was the last tuneup? Still have points? Are you getting good fire to all the plugs. (not yellow spark either)
