Hey guys,

Just got done replacing water pump and noticed the shift shaft seal is leaking.

I am looking at the parts diagram and starting to wonder if I am missing seals on it as it is. (I just got this boat from an auction) It seems to run great on the Muffs but noticed oil seeping out of the shaft seal.

Could you guys confirm what all I would need to get it done?

I am hoping I can track down a cover somewhere (PN 0385756) so I can just do a direct swap on but looking at the parts fiche its also showing Part 91 0317922 (which is discontinued) which is a long rubber boot from the looks of things. But parts says "seal shift rod long" if I am not mistaken this motor would have the short shift shaft? so it doesnt need it?

Any help is appreciated! Thank you

I think those boots just help keep the shaft clean as it rides up and down on the seal, keeping exhaust contaminants away. Id try and get one or make one if you can, but its not essential but youd be doing your seal again sooner. If its not on there that will be partly why its failed. I try and get seals with two lips too

Thanks! ill try and get it. may just order a couple extra O rings for that case if I can't find the complete "case" for the shift shaft.

I know there's a basic video on youtube showing an old 73 johnson and a guy doing the seal which is easy. just wasnt sure if it was the same set up as this 50hp

Changing the o-ring on the cover is fairly simple.----No need for a new cover.-----Correct that boot is there to keep dirt out of the area.----Nothing to do with sealing the oil.
