1973 johnson 85 hp gearcase removal

How do you get the shift linkage off this to drop the lower unit. need help please

Look under the bottom carb, the shift control cable attaches to a bellcrank that moves the shift rod up and down. Split the bellcrank and the shift rod will drop with the lower unit.

stupid question but how do yo split the bell crank, do you take out the two bolts that hold it together and if so what happens to the pin that goes through the shift rod does it stay in the shift rod? thanks for your quick reply

Take out the bolts that hold it togeather, the pin is actually attached to one side of the bellcrank.

there is a nut that has to be removed that holds the linkage to control lever and a cotter pin on the top side of that. then there is a bolt that holds it together that looks like it attches to the powerhead i think and then it should come apart. does this sound right?

There is no cotter pin involved. The bellcrank has two parallel pieces. Loosen the screw that forms the fulcrum of the bellcrank and spread the fingers at the shift rod end to release the pin that holds the shift rod.

Its been awhile, but that sounds about right.
You can go to the Johnson website and look at a parts breakdown of your engine. The shift linkage you need to look at is in the cylinder and crankcase section.
